About this deal

At others, what seem like poetic phrases are in fact vague and somewhat showy – Rory, for example, "stood like a rumour", an image which seems like it means something but, upon closer inspection, really doesn't. Zusak compared the writing of the book to The Odyssey, in the sense that the writing of the book was the war, and that a possible sequel to the book would be the exploration of coming home. I tried the audiobook because it's narrated by the author and I gave it a fair go but I just wasn't into it. The writing is beautiful in spots, and Zusak fans will find much of the flowery (and sometimes ponderous) prose they love him for.

Mr Dunbar is never mentioned by name, being referred to exclusively as “the Murderer” (though his crime would appear to be abandonment rather than homicide). We’re made up of stories – not only the stories of our lives, but the stories of lives that came before our lives. The same day Michael challenges the worst bully to a fight is the day that Penelope receives a cancer diagnosis and begins treatment. Furthermore, I sort of promised myself not to read anything else until I was done with this effing book, which gave me one of my worst reading slumps ever. The book is a little difficult to get into at first (and I did have to read the first chapter twice to get the rhythm of the writing) as it jumps around in time and many things don't have a significance until later.Matthew and Rory, the eldest two brothers, work to support the family; Henry, the middle brother, re-sells items found at garage sales and arranges sports bets. At the heart of all of this is Clay, the bridge-builder whose love for stories allows him to rebuild a family shattered by tragedy. Edwards Award from the American Library Association, granted to authors who make significant, lasting contributions to young adult literature. Unfortunately he wrote the next big disappointment and I fell from this Bridge of Clay into a sea of disappointment! so im pretty sure that even an infinite combination of words will spectacularly fail in describing what this story means to me, because it has been nearly 12 hours since i finished reading this and i still am at a loss at how to convey the heartbreaking beauty of this book.

Publishers Weekly commented that Zusak builds tension skilfully by his use of foreshadowing and symbolism, which exposes the secrets of the story. In fact, the first part of the book is a trundling, elliptical orgasm that strings along a bunch of words about a murderer and a mule and some animals named after characters in The Odyssey. There were times this book really spoke to me, but then would follow a really long chapter focused on horse racing and I felt my attention waning. Wonderful writing, and truly, it all does come together somehow, but I understand some readers don’t let it wash over them long enough for it to soak in.I gotta wrap this up because I'm getting angrier the more I think about what a waste of tree pulp this book is.
