About this deal

RS 3 Pro can pair with the all-new DJI Transmission to offer a customized shooting solution. The DJI Video Transmitter can be powered directly by RS 3 Pro and mounts conveniently on the bottom via the cold shoe without the need for an additional battery, reducing the burden for handheld setup. The RS 3 Pro was easily able to support our Canon EOS 650D with a Canon Zoom EF 24-70 lens attached. Our kit’s weight of 1.484kg was a lot lighter than the gimbal’s maximum payload of 4.5kg so the stabiliser had no trouble supporting our set-up. By long pressing the gimbal’s trigger and M button simultaneously we could calibrate the stabiliser to make it happier with its payload. Like balancing, calibration helps improve the gimbal’s performance and reduces wear and tear on the motors. To make it easier to manoeuvre the RS 3 Pro you can mount a supplied rear handle. This enables you to support the stabiliser with two hands (which is welcome on a long shoot where the gimbal seems to get heavier over time!). We recognize the LiDAR Range Finder is an edge-case accessory, but creators who rely on manual focus lenses may appreciate it. If you're operating a camera solo, taking manual focus off of your plate lets you pay more attention to framing and exposure. It's a neat feature for sure, but a costly one.

As with previous Ronin’s, the main gimbal is only part of the story. As a stand-alone product, it’s good, adds the optional accessories, and the Ronin RS3 Pro transforms into an essential filmmaking tool that can be used on any production size. Staying with the axis and the carbon arms, these have been extended slightly to enable the mounting of some of the new midweight professional cameras, such as the Sony FX6 and Canon EOS C70. For a gimbal of this size to take the weight of either of these cameras is impressive. While I don’t have access to either of these cameras, a Canon C100 MKII comfortably sat on the DJI Ronin RS3 Pro without issue and with plenty of clearance. The Pro edition handles heavier rigs than the standard, up to 10 pounds versus 6.6, and supports a LiDAR focus accessory (more on that later), but aside from that, there aren't too many differences. The RS 3 Pro (right) is bigger than the regular RS 3 (center) or Mini (left) Once the camera balance has been found, a cable can be plugged into the camera’s USB-C port and directly into the side of the gimbal. The shutter can easily be activated from the direct control button on the grip. The new LiDAR Range Finder (RS) can project 43,200 ranging points within a 14-meter distance. [2]It also features a built-in camera with an equivalent focal length of 30 mm and a wide FOV of 70°, catering to the focusing needs of most scenarios. While the small RavenEye is an ideal solution for most, DJI has also added Pro-Grade video transmission and monitoring compatibility. The DJI RS3 Pro is equipped with DJI O3 Pro video transmission technology. This enables video transmission to a distance of up to 6km and full compatibility with the High-Bright Remote Monitor that was launched alongside the Ronin 4D. This monitor supports 1080p/60fps live feed to multiple receivers. The DJI RS 3 Pro benefits from a 28% larger display to provide far more detail compared to the previous RS 2. Laboratory testing has also shown that the RS 3 Pro provides a 20% increase in stability over the RS 2 which is ideal for effortlessly managing low-angle shots, running scenarios, or switching between high and low positions. Does the RS 3 Pro have flexible handling options?

Then there’s the camera compatibility. Being able to take the larger cameras is extremely useful, and now that I’m about to change from the Sony PXW FS7 to a Canon EOS 5R C this gimbal will provide all the performance I need and in a very small form.

The RS 3 Pro’s new Mode switch provides a more ergonomic way of changing the gimbal’s shooting modes. (Image credit: George Cairns) Remote possibilities are expanded tenfold with the extensive list of compatible products designed for use with the DJI RS 3 Pro. Included in this list are the DJI High-Bright Remote Monitor, the DJI Video Transmitter, and the DJI LiDAR Range Finder. Whilst the Transmission combo uses the latest O3 Pro video transmission technology to provide an incredible 20,000-foot range for a 1080p/60fps H.264 live feed, the Focus Motor and LiDAR Range Finder work together to provide cinematic autofocus capabilities. What’s in the box? Due to the huge variety of uses, I can only imagine the product designers and electrical engineers at DJI sweating over what seems like an impossible task. Setting up the DJI RS3 Pro at the base level is easy; plug it in balance, and you’re ready to go. At the next level, plug in the RavenEye, hook in a mobile phone, and you have wireless video transmission, all very clever; then you have the HighBright Control screen, and so on. What’s nice about the RS3 Pro is that it’s affordable at the base level of a single-handed gimbal stabiliser. Then as your needs progress, you can bolt on that additional functionality. Then, when you need something a lot more, the RS3 can be unbolted from the grip, placed onto a car, aerial or another rig, and incorporated. It is simply the most expandable and flexible gimbal out there.

What’s interesting is that DJI sees the huge potential of the RS3 Pro, so have given it the same access to the High-Bright Remote Monitor and control units. This means that you could mount the Ronin RS3 Pro on an exterior car rig and remotely control the unit from inside the car with full control over the gimbal and camera. One of the instantly notable features in the new larger 1.8 OLED full-colour screen. This is 28% larger than the one on the RS2 and allows you to switch settings, with the optional RavenEye plugged in, you can also get a live view stream. DJI RS 3 Pro: It is recommended to use a charger with PD or QC 2.0 fast charging protocol with charging power ≤ 24Wto charge the DJI RS 3 Pro battery grip, which takes about 90 minutes to be fully charged. Taking just the base Ronin RS3 Pro into consideration in this review and it is incredible, with solid support for all mirrorless and DSLR cameras suited to filmmaking. In use, the RS3 Pro is fast to react and offers plenty of onboard adjustments and features. However, it really starts to shine once the accessories are attached, and while most accessories can wait there are two that you should consider purchasing at the outset; the RavenEye and Focus motor. The DJI RS3 Pro, however, is a very different device from most other gimbals on the market. Sure, it has accessories that enable wireless video transmission and control, but it’s part of an eco-system with the DJI RS3 Pro at the core. Pro level stabilisation at an affordable priceThe RS 3 Pro has also benefitted from a stabilisation algorithm update. This 3rd-gen update provides a 20% increase in stability over the RS 2 and is perfect for effortlessly managing low-angle shots, running scenarios, or switching between high and low positions. And, if you’re looking for even smoother results, the RS 3 Pro uses a SuperSmooth mode to increase motor torque and further enhance stabilisation. Customisable Controls Ultimately in isolation, the DJI Ronin RS3 Pro is an excellent gimbal stabiliser with so much potential, especially once you add the Focus motor, Raven Eye or High Bright control monitor, which I will look at in a separate review. Taking a step up from the RS 2, the RS 3 Pro comes equipped with a 1.8-inch OLED full-colour touchscreen display that is 28% larger than its predecessor. With support for most Ronin app settings, users can intuitively navigate through the redesigned interface to set their parameters as desired.

Looking at the features of the Ronin RS3 Pro and the first thing you notice is the enhancements in design. The longer carbon arms and large touch screen OLED make mounting the camera and navigating settings that much easier. Fewer wires with Bluetooth shutter control Not only does the RS 3 Pro provide users with ample control over the gimbal, but it also allows users to operate the camera's zoom, focus, shutter, aperture, and ISO using the front dial. This makes the RS 3 Pro an incredibly efficient option for single-handed use. Get Connected DJI RS 3: It is recommended to use a charger supporting PD fast charging protocol with charging power ≤ 18 Wto charge the DJI RS 3 battery grip, which takes about 150 minutesto be fully charged. The RS3 Pro can also be used with the 4D Hand Grips, Master Wheels and Force Pro for gimbal and focus control. Lifting the relatively compact gimbal and while still relatively light compared with some larger gimbals, it’s not as light as the likes of the WeeBill 3.The camera’s OLED is clear and used as a straightforward gimbal, with the camera mounted high above the rear arm. Even dropping the camera down to ground level, there’s enough arm clearance to pull out the screen so you can see what’s happening. The only time seeing the screen becomes difficult is when using the 3D Roll 360. It's an expensive add-on, nearly the price of the gimbal itself, but you may find it worthwhile if you use manual-focus cinema lenses and are after automatic focus pulls. There's some setup required to bridge the gap between it and fully manual lenses. You'll need to calibrate focus points at 1 and 4 meters prior to use, on a lens-by-lens basis. The Range Finder stores up to three profiles. The focus motor works by using a cog system to adjust focus and/or zoom. The Gear Strip ties around the barrel of the lens and features a concave design that fits with the prongs of the motorised cog to create a pulley system. Once the Multi-Camera Control Cable is plugged into the correct port, the front dial of your RS device can be used to operate this motorised focus system. Can focus/zoom be operated by the app? DJI is known for their product design; they make imaging devices that don’t follow conventions, and some, such as the Phantom, have become iconic. The DJI Ronin RS3 Pro matches the quality of the products that have come before, with the stunning carbon arms sitting atop a sturdy-looking grip and base. What I also really like is the expandability of the system. For myself, I don’t need the optional High Bright Remote Screen, but it’s nice to think that one day I may be running a production that requires more than just myself monitoring what’s going on!
