About this deal

Expert Dancer: Eric is a highly skilled dancer. He was able to dance with Ariel with admirable skill. There's a subtle nod to Once Upon a Time, when Eric guesses "Emma, Snow, and Regina" as Ariel's potential names -- not significant, but a nice "Easter Egg" of sorts for Disney fans. The Princess and the Frog: Tiana • Louis • Ray • Dr. Facilier • Almost There Tiana • Prince Naveen • Platinum Tiana • Charlotte La Bouff

In the 2007 Broadway musical adaptation of the Disney film, the role of Eric was originated by Sean Palmer and notably replaced with Drew Seeley after Palmer's departure. It is explained through dialogue that Eric's father has passed away, and it is Grimsby's duty to help Eric find a bride, so he can return to the throne properly, despite Eric's affinity for exploring the seas. Big Hero 6: Hiro • Baymax • Fred • Wasabi • Honey Lemon • Go Go Tomago • Tadashi Hamada • Yokai • Mochi It just didn't work for me, because the entire time, I kept going, "There's nothing in the movie to support this!" Coco: Miguel Rivera • Héctor • Dante • Imelda • Pepita • Alebrije Dante • Disguised Miguel • Ernesto • Mama CocoPrince Eric is the second Disney Prince to kill the film's villain, the first was Prince Phillip when he killed Maleficent.

Expert Musician: Eric is a highly skilled musician and is capable of playing a flute with admirable skill. Eric’s depiction I really liked most of the time though in some cases I didn’t feel as if he was the same guy from the movie which left me feeling disconnected from him. Ariel was the same even though the scenes with her and Eric together are some of my favorite parts and the ones the most well written. The rest of the characters were very generic and I don’t have any opinion on them aside that they were there. There are also several gay and non binary characters who I just felt were thrown in just because. In the ending credits, Eric and Ariel, having finally become human, are seen getting married in a ceremony gathered with humans and merpeople where they eventually kiss. The Little Mermaid: Ariel • Flounder • Sebastian • Ursula • King Triton • Prince Eric • Wedding Ariel • Vanessa • Flotsam • Amethyst Ursula • Ruby Ariel And for me, it didn't quite work. Ursula is the main villain here, but Miller revises her character in a way that doesn't quite fit her portrayal in the animated film. There, Ursula is hell-bent on revenge against Triton for some perceived slight and subsequent banishment (of which we know very little) and could really care less about humans except as a way to needle Triton. For fans of Disney Twisted Tales and Serena Valentino's Villains comes the next book of the Disney Prince Young Adult series. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: " Down the Rabbit Hole" • " Trust Me" • " Forget Me Not" • " The Serpent" • " Heart of Stone" • " Who's Alice?" • " Bad Blood" • " Home" • " Nothing to Fear" • " Dirty Little Secrets" • " Heart of the Matter" • " To Catch a Thief" • " And They Lived..." Beauty and the Beast: Belle • Beast • Lumiere • Cogsworth • Mrs. Potts • Chip • Maurice • Philippe • Gaston • LeFou

Linsey Miller crafts a novel that makes Prince Eric’s story more relevant to a modern teenage reader. She subtly uses non-gender-specific wording when characters in Eric’s sphere talk about love, and uses they/them pronouns when talking about the pirate Sauer. Ariel was always an inquisitive and take-charge character, which is consistently carried over through part of Eric’s adventure that she joins him for. Diehard fans of The Little Mermaidwill have to look past a few moments of contradiction with the film, such as Eric’s attempt at a near-fatal kiss with Ariel during a romantic boat ride, or Ursula’s magic shell not hypnotizing him right away when she appears on the shore singing to him as Vanessa. Speaking of Ursula, the book does a not-so-great job of trying to keep the identity of the witch who cursed Eric a secret. And then it misses the chance to have a meaningful moment between two of Ursula’s victims who found each other because of the sea witch’s meddling, skipping right from her demise to their wedding (although another modernization is a coda that sets their nuptials about two years later). I found this retelling to be really charming. Linsey Miller was able to add a lot of character and story beats to Eric’s arc while remaining true to Ariel’s story as told in the movie. His grief for his dead parents, his friendship with those he has left, and his desperate search for a way to break his curse all make for a likable and relatable hero anyone can root for. Even his undeniably brief romance with Ariel work within the context of how he has been forced to love due to his curse. In Kinect: Disneyland Adventures, Prince Eric is mentioned by Ariel: "Oh, I can't wait to dance with Eric. He's so handsome."
