About this deal

On April 12, 2018, we received a xylitol product alert submission from a pet lover who brought a company called No Cow (previously called D's Naturals) to our attention. Their Fluffbutter spreads contain xylitol – so please be sure to keep them far away from your dogs and help spread the word. One of the most common questions pup owners have is, can dogs have peanut butter made for humans? It depends on the ingredients. The most crucial thing to keep in mind is that dogs require xylitol-free peanut butter. Xylitol is a sugar substitute used in sugar-free chewing gum, toothpaste, chewable vitamins, baked goods, and some human peanut butter brands. While safe for humans, xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs.

Yes, crunchy peanut butter is safe for dogs as long as you follow the same ingredient guidelines. But if your pup has digestive problems, the peanut chunks may be harder for him to digest. Is JIF Peanut Butter Safe For Dogs? Peanut butter is one thing, but jelly should be off-limits to your dog. Why? First, there’s a lot of sugar in jam, jelly, and preserves — if you’re already giving your dog peanut butter, adding extra sugar will further increase the risk of obesity and diabetes. Second, some jelly contains dog-dangerous xylitol. Third, some types of jelly are made from fruits that you shouldn’t give your dog. Peanut butter is great as an occasional "high value" treat, it’s useful for hiding pills, and it can even be used to distract your dog while giving them a bath or trimming their nails.High source of Protein: Protein is an extremely important nutrient in your dog’s diet. It makes sure that your Dog grows faster and can repair its muscle from any injury. Usually, your dog gets the most energy from the meal. Sugar– Refers to sucrose, caramel, corn syrup molasses, and other forms. Some peanut butters add multiple types of sugar. While sugar may not be immediately harmful to dogs, it can lead to an increased risk of obesity and diabetes. [ 4] This could also help to improve your dog’s dry coat and inflamed skin. As peanut butter is high in good fats, a small amount is all that is required to keep your dog healthy.

You may have read that crunchy peanut butter can be a choking hazard for dogs. This is pretty unlikely unless you’re giving a very small dog a very large amount of crunchy peanut butter. I, unfortunately, discovered this when filling my pups Kong Extreme chew toy. The thinner consistency allowed it to slowly leak out over time – A peanut butter puddle nearly sent me slipping across my hardwood floor! Generally speaking, any peanut butter that doesn’t contain xylitol (or chocolate) should be fine for a dog. It can be a good source of protein and healthy fat for your dog — in moderation, of course. However, some peanut butters are healthier than others. Not a problem, Teddie Super Chunky Peanut Butter has you covered. Made in America from USA grown peanuts, this peanut butter is as natural as it is delicious (very!) Peanuts also contain high levels of fat. This can cause digestive upset and even pancreatitis if your dog eats high-fat foods, such as peanuts, on a regular basis or in large quantities. How Many Peanuts Can My Dog Have?Xylitol is perfectly safe for humans to eat, but it is very toxic to dogs, even in very low amounts. Just .1gram of xylitol per kg of the dog’s weight can lead to a rapid and dangerous blood: sugar drop, which is known as hypoglycaemia. This can present with symptoms including disorientation, weakness, collapse and even seizures, and requires urgent veterinary attention. Update (August 2023): We have reached out for verification but it seems as though No Cow has stopped manufacturing their Fluffbutter spreads. Note: While almonds, and just about any nut, can cause digestive upset, including pancreatitis, in dogs, contrary to what you may have read elsewhere on the Internet, regular (sweet) almonds, the type that are most common are not toxic to dogs. If your xylitol-free peanut butter contains one or more of the above ingredients, you might want to swap over to another brand.

It is always suggested that you should give a small amount of Peanut Butter Daily to your dog. In case you see something goes wrong then you should consult a veterinarian. Few symptoms you may notice if your dogs get an allergic reaction to Peanut Butter. Read the below points – This is a normal behavior of “true peanut butters” that contain just peanuts and maybe a pinch of salt. While these ingredients might make the peanut butter more spreadable or keep longer, they do not benefit your dog. Mono and Diglycerides– While a 2006 Study [ 5] found no side effects in the blood work of beagles, Veterinarian, Dr. Sara Ochoa said it’s not an ideal ingredient to feed dogs and may lead to obesity and heart problems. For example, while strawberry jelly may not be toxic to dogs, grape jelly can be. Grapes are poisonous to some dogs and can cause acute kidney failure. The same goes for raisins and currants.Just a slightly higher dose of .5grams of xylitol per kg of the dog’s weight can lead to rapid onset permanent liver damage, which can ultimately prove fatal. Below is a summary of the successes so far in getting brands to remove xylitol from their products or do a better job of notifying pet owners about the potential dangers. Because it’s high in calories and fat, it’s wise to keep peanut butter portions to a minimum to avoid weight gain. If your pup is nuts for peanut butter, you can give him 1/2 teaspoon for a small dog or 1 teaspoon for a medium or large dog twice per day. Can Dogs Have Crunchy Peanut Butter?
