About this deal

This book was more up my alley when I was first learning to play. It’s highly practical, teaching you how to play grooves in dozens of styles. It still remains one of my favorite drum books to this day.

The magic of it comes from the fact that it applies dots and accents where they normally wouldn’t be, which prepares you for anything and everything. In my teaching practice, The Art of Bop Drumming overshadows this book but it is still a great lesson in language and history. The introduction alone is worth the price, relating jazz drumming to independence in Balinese dance training and the independent control of each muscle of the body in Hindu drumming and dance. What Did I Miss? Besides syncopation, this is a great book to test and work on your reading skills as it includes many different notes and rests like dotted eights, accent eights, eighth-note triplets, s ixteenth notes, and much more. Modern Reading Text features plenty of rests, ties, and strange reading situations that will make you look twice. As much as I love Syncopation, I think an intermediate drummer would get more value out of Modern Reading Text in 4/4 as it provides more of a challenge.

The title is explicit enough, but not including exercises to develop your foot as well as your hands is the only thing preventing this book from reaching the perfect score. Drum books are incredibly valuable tools for developing skills on the drums. They provide a wealth of information that can help both beginners and experienced drummers alike become better players. Another roots exploration, this book is a deep history lesson filled with essays, interviews and transcriptions. It will take you from Congo Square through Ragtime, Brass bands, Jazz funerals, second line Street beats and modern applications. Crucially, they will also help you develop hand-eye coordination and muscle memory, so you can play accurately and fluidly. Guiliana’s approach might seem like it gives prominence to drumming mechanics, but if you dig down below the surface, he’s really referring to the nuts and bolts of music-making.It may be a good idea for the beginner to at least have the knowledge of how rolls are played, for example, a nine-stroke roll, also be aware already of how drum music is read.

Description: Afro-Cuban Rhythms For Drumset is the perfect book to help you learn styles like Guaguanco, Mozambique, Songo, Bembe, and Merengue. This book will explain the history behind each style as well as how each style translates to the drum-set from different Afro-Cuban percussion parts. Description: 4-Way Coordination will provide you with exercises to help your four limbs work together effectively. Coordination is different from independence – which is the separation between limbs. Some of the topics covered in this book are melodic ( linear) coordination, harmonic (non-linear) coordination, and four-way coordination. The book guides you from simple patterns all the way to advanced polyrhythm exercises, which will be difficult even for experienced players!

Modern Concert Solos is slightly more advanced and should only be used by drummer’s that have a good grasp over the PAS 40 rudiments as well as some decent reading chops. Each solo varies in difficulty level, but all of them are a challenge to bring up to the requested speed. Overall, this is a great book to let beginners build a solid independence foundation, leading to an easier time in the future when learning more complicated pieces. Description: Cirone’s book will challenge the reading skills of ALL intermediate and advanced drummers. The 50 solos included in this book will help you develop your musicality, interpretation skills, and your technique. All of these solos are orchestral pieces, so they will sound drastically different from any rudimental solos you’ve played.

ABOUT EBOOKS

It is filled with all the hand patterns you could ever need, including the basic rudiments. Once you are into the book it will dive into different rolls, articulation, and note types (triplets, eighths, sixteenths, etc.). If you haven’t gathered by now, I consider rhythm reading to be an essential practice tool. The ability to read rhythms is so important due to its versatility and how it helps develop coordination and independence. Drummers can learn how each musical genre developed and inspired the next in the book’s historical breakdowns for each style and sub-style. In addition, the best drum performances from every genre are included in the author’s meticulously crafted list of recommended listening material. The book also provides detailed breakdowns of the most significant drum grooves from the previous century, allowing drummers to visualize the rhythms. Brazilian percussion has had a significant impact on popular music genres such as jazz, funk, and hip-hop. Description: Alan Dawson taught some of the world’s greatest drummers including Tony Williams, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Steve Smith. This book will cover Dawson’s approach to rudiments, coordination, and soloing. Also included is his approach to interpreting Ted Reed’s Syncopation book.
