About this deal

Clarice lives at home in a two-up two-down with her mum and sister. Every second of her spare time she paints: art deco-inspired patterns on china in sunshiny bright bursts of colour. Old duffers in the industry mansplain why women won’t buy her cheap and cheerful pottery (“you’ll find the modern woman has a more refined taste”). But Clarice knows exactly what women want (her Bizarre collection eventually sold more than 8.5m pieces). The film catches the excitement of this moment for Clarice, and Dynevor’s performance is wonderful. But the one thing that will catch your attention is the name at the top of the cast list. Phoebe Dynevor, from the huge Netflix hit, Bridgerton. And she makes this, her first feature film, very much her own. What’s the story? A film about a famous battle of the Korean War, from the director of Dr. No and Thunderball and starring Henry V, Yojimbo and Shaft. It sounds like a nailed-on cult classic – which it is to some extent – but it’s also one of the most notorious flops in cinema history. A spokesperson for Sky said that the Vue, Odeon and Cineworld chains were not showing the film because they require a gap between the theatrical release and availability on streaming services, rather than simultaneously releasing a film on both platforms, known as 'day and date release'. Clarice Cliff (Phoebe Dynevor) is a vivacious young factory worker in the industrial British midlands of the 1920s. Her creativity and ambition drives her to move factory to factory, despite the financial impact on the household she shares with her widowed mother Ann (Kerry Fox) and youngest sister Dot (Darci Shaw). Bursting at the seams with ideas for colors and shapes, Clarice takes more and more dangerous risks -- but she manages to stay one step ahead of the workhouse and impress the eccentric factory owner Colley Shorter (Matthew Goode) on the way with her talent and innovation. Apprenticed to renowned Art Designer Fred Ridgeway (David Morrissey) and with support from Colley and other women in the factory, Clarice fights her way through to design the unprecedented Art Deco 'Bizarre' range. In the middle of the Great Depression, she ensures the factory's survival and her future as one of the greatest Art Deco designers and a household name. Movie lovers wanting to see Stoke-on-Trent-based film The Colour Room on the big screen will need to travel out of the area to find a cinema screening it. What’s the story? A gothic portmanteau Western in which two strangers spin scary tales around a campfire. Like most anthology films, the individual stories are hit-and-miss. But what makes Grim Prairie Tales such a lost gem are the wraparound segments in which Dourif’s uptight city clerk is forced to spend a long, dark night of the soul with Jones’ grotesque bounty hunter (and the corpse he’s got in tow).

I remember the pattern but I didn’t know how influential she’d been on potteries and indeed in design, so it was quite thrilling to be a part of this. We’re very much in a time, thankfully, that things are changing for women in general: we suddenly have this poster child from the past. It’s very inspiring. I didn’t know anything about Colley Shorter, obviously, but that’s quite nice that he’s behind the scenes - it gives me slightly more leeway with how we wanted to go about portraying him.Inspired by the life of pioneering ceramicist Clarice Cliff, The Colour Room dives into 1920s Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of England’s pottery manufacturing industry.
