While Samsung’s reluctance to use bright colors on expensive phones remains disappointing, I’d happily take interesting dark shades like the green above instead. Part of Samsung’s new S22 lineup, but looking nothing like its siblings, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is to the casual observer a Galaxy Note in a shiny, new coat. It does have a much bigger and bolder camera array (lifted pretty much intact from the S21 Ultra), but it’s otherwise a canny adjustment of the Note aesthetic or, as Samsung might call it, the “Note Experience.” Still, this adjustment leaves it as easily the best Samsung phone. User Available Memory : User memory is less than the total memory due to storage of the operating system and software used to operate the device features. Actual user memory will vary depending on the operator and may change after software upgrades are performed. Performance-wise, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor acquits itself nicely (no, it doesn’t beat Apple’s A15 Bionic). The point is, we couldn't find a single app that was sluggish or disappointing on the mobile monolith.

This “Space Zoom”, as Samsung still insists on calling it, is much improved this year. During my time with the handset, I captured a bunch of pictures at maximum zoom range on both the S22 Ultra and the S21, with the former offering a much cleaner image, especially after the phone’s AI tweaks were applied. Just look at this image of the tip of Canary Wharf’s One Canada Square – impressive, isn’t it?I’m also yet to test the new graphics rendering features that the Xclipse GPU supports, since there doesn’t seem to be a single game on the Google Play store that currently utilises ray tracing and VRS. Some mobile apps may restrict content to be shared on other screens or may require a touch screen to be able to interact with them. As for the screen, the S22’s display is yet another Dynamic AMOLED 2X affair, with a maximum WQHD+ (3,088 x 1,440) resolution and an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz. According to Samsung, the screen’s minimum starting refresh rate has been adjusted from 10Hz down to 1Hz, which should let the S22 Ultra save a bit more energy when performing actions such as reading ebooks.Measured diagonally, the screen size is 6.8 " as the full rectangle and 6.8 " with accounting for the rounded corners. Actual viewable area is reduced due to the rounded corners and camera cutout.

We could hear our caller clearly, and they told us we were coming through equally clear. The 5G performance (we were on T-Mobile in the US) was, by turns, excellent and average – it seemed to depend on how close we were to a decent 5G tower. Inside, Samsung’s homebrew Exynos 2200 powers things in the UK, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 making an appearance in US models. Both are built using a 4nm fabrication process and are “the most powerful processors ever on a Galaxy device”. We certainly hope so – we don’t want it to be slower than last year’s Exynos 2100. The Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with Vision Booster on Galaxy S22 Ultra received a certification from VDE Germany for 100 percent Mobile Color Volume in the DCI-P3 color range, which means your images aren’t washed out and you’ll get unbelievably vivid colors regardless of differing levels of brightness. The display can achieve peak brightness of up to 1750 nits, improving the contrast between dark and light aspects of digital content for a more brilliant picture quality, with a 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio to make your mobile experience more immersive.

We were less impressed with the phone’s Portrait Video capabilities, which come nowhere close to the magic of Apple’s iPhone 13 line’s Cinematic mode video (it needs a face in frame to work). The auto-framing capability, which literally zooms the camera in and out to keep people in frame, doesn’t seem all that useful – we suspect it needs more refinement. In our estimation, the S Pen is a wildly useful implement and, despite its small size (small for this reviewer’s hands anyway), it’s an effective drawing implement. We opened Sketchbook and had a great time drawing, especially because the pen and screen recognize pressure and angle. The good news is that the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s Exynos 2200 performed admirably in our CPU-heavy benchmarks. In the Geekbench 5 single and multicore tests, the S22 Ultra achieved speeds of 1,116 and 3,736 respectively, which is a performance improvement of up to 22% compared to last year’s model. It’s still no match for the raw power of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but the gap is finally closing.
